3 Things I Hate About Fall/Winter

As much as I love the cold compared to the blistering heat, there are some things about the season that I'm not very happy about. While this might come as a surprise to you, Fall and Winter aren't perfect despite what we crank them up to be. Sure, you can sleep comfortably and avoid the sweltering heat, but that doesn't mean there aren't any compromises.

1. Day Light Savings

We all know what day light savings is. It's that time of the year to switch your clocks back an hour. Just kidding, your magical technological contraptions will do it themselves! Anyways, we can all agree that getting an extra hour to sleep on Saturday is one of those little gifts from life to give you a break, right? So what's so bad about it? Does the Skyakes Staff hate rest? Do we have something against sleep and extra time?

Somebody stop that dog! Won't anyone think of the children?!

The problem with day light savings is that the benefits don't last forever. After getting a nice hour of extra sleep, what then? We suddenly change our minds and switch our clocks forward and call it a day? Of course not; we have to live with it until summer. Suddenly, we have to endure extremely bright mornings that feel like afternoons and late afternoons that look like sunsets.

Along with the region's seasonal day changes, the hour set-back pushes days to start earlier and end earlier. By the time you're leaving work or school, the sun is waving you goodbye and you end up stuck with lame ol' moon for the rest of your "leisure" time before the next full day of work.

Go away! Nobody wants you!

4 Ways The Cold Is On Your Side

The hot topic of the week is the drop in temperature. Unless you live under a highly ventilated, heated rock, you've probably noticed that you can't simply wear shorts and t-shirts nowadays. It's that time of the year to dust off the winter jackets and get ready to endure the upcoming cold weather. The thing is, some people find winter one of the worst things in the world, second to world poverty itself. Some people simply find winter as unbearably cold and would rather prefer the good ol' humid, warm temperature. The thing is, the cold winter nights aren't as bad as they're cranked up to be.

"I'm back!"

4. Weight Loss

Doesn't everybody want to lose weight and look handsome? While we can't change your handsomeness-level, we can trim some of the fat on the side. Winter can offer one of the most sought after wishes of every self-conscious, un-secure teen/adult, passive weight loss. Almost all magic "diet pills" use the same cliche to losing weight in exchange of absolutely no work on your behalf. But hold on, instead of expensive pills that "celebrities use", why not simply endure winter?

You can easily burn calories from simply sitting at your desk, freezing your finger tips and ears off. How? By simply sitting around freezing, your body is constantly trying to generate enough heat to make sure you don't die of frostbite. Your body doesn't simply rub two sticks together and achieve 98 degrees worth of temperature. It takes fuel to make that heat, and that fuel is your body fat.

More like 98 degrees of chocolaty goodness!

How to Treat Frostbite

Okay, so you just got back from saving the world from aliens by walking day and night in snow and rain to the military base near-by to tell them the secret weak-spot in between the arms of the aliens. Good job -insert your name here-, but what's this? Strange grey skin on your cold begotten hands? Could  his be some new alien disease you've contracted?! No, silly, it's frostbite.

Even these clothespins are cold.

In order to treat frostbite, we need to determine the severity of the frostbite.
Frostnip - Painful sensation, red skin, skin still responds normally to pressure.
Superficial Frostbite - Numbness, white to greyish skin color, skin still feels soft
Deep Frostbite - Numbness, white to greyish-yellow skin color, skin feels unusually firm and waxy.

How to Get Get Up In The Morning

So you're late to school/work again? You're teacher/boss is threatening to deduct points/lower your pay? Well it's time to buy a baseball bat, and destroy their office  and put it in your closet, because it has nothing to do with this! If you've ever had a problem not falling back to sleep after waking up, try some of these suggestions.

Even statues get pretty sleepy.

Benefits of Taking Cold Showers

Cold showers? According to my mother, that's blasphemy! If I was to do such a thing, my back/arms/legs would crack and shatter from the evil blast of coldness. Well, back in real life, taking cold showers can offer numerous benefits for your health.
